Story in your pocket: mobile adventures worth finishing

There's a myth that phones are only good for mindless games. I get where it comes from, but it's just not true anymore. Some of the most affecting stories I've played in the last year were on a five-inch screen.

Adventure games in particular thrive here. Something like Whisperwood Trail proves you don't need forty hours to leave a mark. A tight five-hour story with real craft behind it can hit harder than a bloated epic.

The key with mobile adventures is atmosphere. Since you're often playing in noisy places, the games that win are the ones that pull you in through art and sound rather than dense mechanics. Headphones help enormously — do yourself that favor.

My tip: play these in one or two sittings rather than spread over weeks. The mood is the whole point, and it fades if you leave too long a gap between chapters.

If you've only ever used your phone for time-killers, try one proper adventure. It might change how you see the whole platform.
